For a Sunday Home Service in Case of Weather-Related Cancellation
This guide is provided to help saints worship God reverently and purposefully at home when travel is unsafe due to snow, ice, or hazardous road conditions. Though we may be physically separated, our worship is united in spirit and truth.
“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)
Preparing Your Heart and Home
Before beginning:
• Choose a quiet place free from distractions.
• Gather your Bible, songbook (if available), and this guide.
• Silence phones and focus on worship.
• If with family, assign roles (song leader, reader, prayer leader).
Suggested Order of Worship
1. Opening Prayer
A brief prayer thanking God for the Lord’s Day, seeking focus, and asking for safe conditions.
Suggested prayer themes:
• Gratitude for God’s providence and protection
• Wisdom and attentiveness to His Word
• Care for the sick, elderly, and traveling
2. Singing
Sing one or more familiar hymns together.
Suggestions:
• “Holy, Holy, Holy”
• “How Great Thou Art”
• “Bless Be the Tie That Binds”
• “Fairest Lord Jesus”
• “I’ll Live in Glory”
3. Scripture Reading
Read aloud one or more of the following:
• Psalm 95:1–7 – A call to worship
• Colossians 3:16–17 – Worship and Christian living
• Hebrews 10:19–25 – Drawing near and encouraging one another
Pause briefly to reflect on what was read.
4. Lesson / Teaching Time
Choose one of the options below for biblical teaching:
Option A: Live or Recorded Teaching
• Watch a sermon or Bible class from Gospel Broadcasting Network (GBN), World
Video Bible School, either live (if available) or from their on-demand archive.
• You may also view a sermon or class from a faithful congregation’s YouTube channel
that teaches sound doctrine from Scripture. You may inquire suggestions from others if
needed.
Tip: Treat this as worship, not entertainment. Sit attentively and follow along in your Bible.
Option B: Family or Personal Bible Study
Read and discuss a short passage together.
Suggested texts:
• Psalm 46 – God our refuge
• Matthew 8:23–27 – Jesus calms the storm
• Romans 8:18–39 – Hope and assurance in Christ
Discussion prompts:
• What does this passage teach about God?
• How should it shape our trust and conduct?
• What encouragement does it give during uncertainty?
5. Prayer of Thanksgiving and Petition
Include:
• Thanks for salvation through Christ
• Prayers for those affected by weather or illness
• Requests for wisdom, faithfulness, and unity
Encourage multiple family members (if present) to participate.
6. The Lord’s Supper
• Read Matthew 26:26–29 or 1 Corinthians 11:23–29
• Reflect soberly on the body and blood of Christ
• Partake reverently and prayerfully
7. Giving (As Planned and Purposeful)
While the assembly is canceled, giving may still be done later, preferably at the next assembly, or set aside as planned in keeping with 1 Corinthians 16:1–2.
8. Closing Prayer
Close with a prayer asking God for:
• Continued protection
• A safe return to the next assembly
• Faithful lives throughout the week
Encouragement for the Day
Even when weather keeps us home, the Lord’s Day remains holy. Use the time to encourage one
another, reach out by phone or message to fellow saints, and meditate on God’s goodness.
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
(Hebrews 10:23)
May God bless you, keep you safe, and strengthen your faith until we are able to assemble again.
